You notice during the middle of the afternoon that your computer is grinding away, using up an inordinate amount of memory — far more than the Word document you are working on should be using. You look at the Task Manager, and other than a few system processes, nothing appears to be running. Very suspicious indeed.

You go online to try to find out what might be causing your memory loss, and low-and-behold a pop-up ad informs you that your computer might be at risk. It could give you an error message that looks like this:

“NOTICE: If your computer has errors in the registry database or file system, it could cause unpredictable or erratic behavior, freezes and crashes. Fixing these errors can increase your computer’s performance and prevent data loss.

Would you like to install SysProtect for free? (Recommended)”

Don’t believe it! SysProtect will do exactly the opposite of what it claims, actually further infecting your machine. Another false anti-virus program is called WinAntiVirusPro. Be very wary if you see ads for either of these malicious programs. Pop-ups for these programs are an indication that Vundo is already infecting your machine, not that you’re still at risk.

Vundo pop-ups are normally associated with Internet Explorer, but they have advanced enough to invade a user’s default browser as well — so you Mozilla Firefox users aren’t necessarily safe from Vundo attacks either.

How did I get Vundo?

Unlike viruses, Trojan horses such as Vundo do not replicate on your machine. This is certainly good news, but it doesn’t mean they’re any less malicious.

The Vundo bug usually infects a machine when a user clicks on a link in a spam email or visits a website that carries the Trojan under the guise of desirable software. Avoiding suspicious websites (and never downloading from them if you do visit) is one easy way to thwart the Vundo threat.

Vundo also spreads through hacked websites (sites the owner doesn’t know have been compromised), Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and peer-to-peer and file-sharing networks. As always, the mantra applies: Don’t accept anything online from anyone you don’t know — especially if they’re claiming it’s free.
